About Zach Martz, Part 3<=Back And so my task began, to make a reasonably funny comic strip using the materials at my disposal. In March of 2004 I drew three "pilot" strips, and began doing daily strips in April. So far I've gotten some favorable comments from my roommates, friends, family members, and even strangers and old classmates. I also think that the quality of the artwork has improved somewhat since I started. I come up with the ideas for the strips days (sometimes hours) before they're published, writing them in dialogue format on a plain school notebook. I frequently play around with ideas, punchlines, ways of phrasing the same sentences, and go through erasers like no one's business. Once I have a healthy backlog of strip ideas, I assign each strip to a certain day, and draw that strip out on the day before(so for example, if a strip is scheduled to run on May 3rd, I draw it on May 2nd). I print out the blank panels from my computer, then draw the strips using a regular rollerball pen. When I'm not drawing the strip or working, I like to hang out with friends, read about politics on the Internet, work out, play video games, and procratinate with the help of Wikipedia. My favorite bands are Rush, Queensryche, Pearl Jam, Metallica, Queen, Linkin Park, 311, Van Halen, and Stone Temple Pilots. I am an enormous fan of South Park, as evidenced by the entire week of strips I did about the show, but other than that I don't make a habit of watching too much television (I'm also anything but a movie buff, however I do own two-thirds of the James Bond DVD collection). I am not a huge fan of reading fiction but I love to read books about history and politics. My current favorite books are Earth the Book by Jon Stewart and 11/22/63 by Stephen King. |
